Questions about Audio Plug ins

I have a few questions about setting a small recording rig on my computer. Here is what I am looking at right now:

1. Audio Interface- (Ordering Soon)
Tascam Us 122L TNT Bundle: (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/US122LTNT/

2. Recording Software- (have)
Cool Edit Pro 2.1 aka Adobe Audition 2.1

3. Midi Controller- (ordering Soon)
M-Audio Oxygen 8 v2

The TNT bundle comes with a condensor Mic and has midi I/O as well so heres where my questions start.

1. Cool Edit 2.1 supports VST plugins. What exactly does this mean and where do I get them? I assume these are amp effects and instrument effects?

2. With the Midi Controller how do you assign what effect you want to emulate? Also, I saw in another thread that you can download programs to use your QWERTY keyboard as a midi controller. Is this reliable or sound good?

3. The Tascam uses USB 2.0 to plug into the computer but Im worried about latency. Will this be a problem? Or will I have to use zero effects when recording to prevent latency issues?

i think your getting way over your head. I run a serious studio production system and the the only hardware i have is a mixer and the m-audio box.

software i use either reason or protools and for editing and mastering i use wavelab. thats all you need . no lag, nothing. very very low buffer rate. Over the years, wavelab dominates.

vst plugins could be downloaded but most music software like logic/reason/protoolz already comes with an amazing array of vst/dmi plugins.

so all you need is :

12 channel mixer
m-audio box
wavelab
and a professional music production program. Nothing more nothing less.. Hell Dr. Dre still uses frootloops for some of his tracks lol..
