Hey everyone.... as i hope that i can get some advice here as i'm really unsure about this.

Ok. i live in a duplex type place with 8 units and so a fairly close friend of mine who lives at another unit here has asked me if he can hook up his wireless router to my internet so he can recieve it via my modem. He's offered to pay half my monthly cost (baja cable co.) however my concerns are several.

Firstly if i decide to do this can he sit there and spy on all my surfing as i obviously want my privacy. Secondly while i've known him a good while and he's a decient type guy however for example just suppose that he did visit porn sites that are off limits (child porn etc.) or if he had sent a threatening e-mail to the u.s. president etc. (secret service) to which could have authorities involved and so i assume that they would trace it to my IP address to which i would suffer the consequences if he is a devious person although he seems like a straight up person.

Anyway my gut tells me not to do this and yet we are friends and i wonder if he'll be offended if i say ''no'' to him,.

Thanks for any advice about this one way or the other.

Anybody that attaches to your internet is your concern as if they do anything illegal comes back on you. You are the account owner, not him, so its your butt if something bad happens. Depending on the router, there may be ways to stop certain things from happening like downloading illegal software through torrents.

Thanks John ... that's what i was thinking as well although i wasn't sure since i know that many motels and/or starbucks etc. offer wifi via their router for people to surf the net.

It is true that he can visit whatever site he wants and your IP will be traceable. But also remember that his browsing history, file downloads and emails can be recovered from his PC too. So if he happens to do anything illegal and you get caught, you can always direct the authorities to check his PC, even if he has deleted it.

But it's better to be safe than sorry anyway and not grant him access. And you should be able to setup site blocks, port blocks, etc on your router in any case.

I'd tell him no, you cant.

Why doesn't he get his own internet? If he can pay half, he could at least pay a few bucks more and just get a basic service for himself.

I bet he cant get his own, cause he doesnt pay his bills--I wouldn't be shocked!

Do yourself a favor and say no
