Questions about modern CPUs

1. Are there currently other sockets being used or is socket 775 the only current socket?

2. If so, what are the other current CPU sockets being used?

3. What socket/sockets were being used right before 775/? ?

4. What socket/sockets were used before that one/those, and so on?

There are tons of different types of CPU sockets.

I'm not really sure where you are going with this though. CPU sockets don't necessarily determine how good a processor is, it only determines its compatibility with motherboards.

That's actually where I'm going with it. Compatibility issues between CPUs and motherboards. Also, I think some people here, like myself, wouldn't mind a rundown on CPUs and socket types in order to understand them better. I have questions in my mind, as far as building a computer, about what processor to get, what motherboard to get, are they gonna be compatible, do certain brands of processors, like pentium, come with a certain socket type, do certain brands of motherboards come with only one certain socket type.

I want to build a couple computers for myself and a couple others, but I have tons of questions running through my mind, which is making me scared of building my first computer.

Well, if you use the right site (such as newegg.com) it should be very simple to match up socket types. All motherboards list the cpu socket types they are compatible with and all processors list their socket type, so it is just a matter of matching up the two.

Edit:

Here's a couple pictures showing what I'm talking about:

LGA775 is the current Intel one, it's about to be superseded by LGA1366, before 775 was Socket 478, AMD currently has AM2+ and is working on AM3, before AM2+ was AM2, before that was 939 and 754, etc...
