Questions about my AMD Phenom 9600

Ok so I recently bought this CPU, and after I bought it I started reading around on it and it seems it has a TLB Bug. My question is, is there a fix for it? It seems as if I have to disable it. If this is the case then how? Can some one link me to the right direction, or better yet explain to me?

Is it even worth it, it seems as if 20% performance sucked up by a bug is probably worth a fix if there is one!

Thank you

I have Agena Core 9600.

The TLB bug causes lockups only in *extremely* rare circumstances; the fix was released because they just don't want to risk it for those who need the stability (you don't want a bugged CPU in your server), but nobody -AFAIK- has ever produced the error in a desktop setting. Also, it's not the bug that causes the slowdown, it's the fix itself (which, if I recall correctly, effectively disables the L3 cache). So, the fix is only worth installing/enabling if you use your computer for mission critical stuff or run a server; but the fix requires a BIOS update, so if you use your coputer for "normal" stuff only, just leave like it is.

Alright thanks, I was thinking about overclocking the CPU (First time overclocking) I am assuming this probably wouldnt be the best CPU to do it with the bug and plus I would only be getting about 200mhz out of it.

^Hey what ever you can get out of it, get out of it, i could get my 5200+ to 3.0ghz max w/o raising my voltage, so thats about 300mhz, So what ever preformance you can get out of it, get it.:)

Can some one lead me to a tutorial? I have been in the Bios before I just don't know specifically where to go and what to raise and actually how much.

Thank You

On my BIOS I saw something that said TLB FIX, should I Disable/Enable it, right now its on Auto and I dont know whats its doing. I have Everest open right now and its not showing L3 Cache

Disable it. I dont think the TLB bug was ever really recreated on a desktop. With it disabled you probable wont be able to get as high of a overclock. But the peformance hit you take with it enabled is worse.

Yeah I went into my bios and I couldn't find anything to overclock it. I know Asus provides a utility but I didn't get anything. I read up on how to overclock and specially for the Phenom being that the CPU can really only go 200-300mhz.

It's not really worth it....

Ill wait till better chips come out and ill pick those up

I got a Asus M3N78-EM board...

Auto: enabled if your processor doesn't end with xx50

I am also using a phenom 9600. For me I have TLB fix turned off and I haven't had any random crashing, bsod, system hang, etc with it disabled. The only time it's hung is when i try to push it further (without manually increasing the voltage). I can push it up to 2.6ghz but had some stability issue after heavy load (gta 4 usually knocked it unconcious in 5 minutes at that oc). I have mine overclocked to 2.5ghz and am completely content with it.

In the past when i had TLB fix enabled i've gotten stable 2.7ghz oc but the performance wasn't satisfactory. :(

EDIT: wow we have the same board lol. I could probably point you to the right page in the bios if you wanted to overclock.

I think you should just return the product and get another processor if you can. :o

I would do that but I ordered it from newegg and I really dont feel like sending it out and waiting a full week to get a new processor. I mean I am not using it for gaming or anything... But maybe down the line I will.. Ill wait till the AM3 processors come out since the board supposedly can support AM3

Unless you plan on going for the lower-end 45nm Athlons (basically Phenoms with less L3 cache), I would just get an AM2+ Phenom II now because having an AM3 Phenom II over an AM2+ Phenom II on an AM2+ board doesn't give any extra peformance.
