questions about (public) proxies

First of all, I haven't been able to find any good public proxies lately. I've checked all kinds of public free proxy sites, and most of them do not work or have such high latency that it's unworkable. Just a couple years ago I remember proxies working just fine, what happened?

But how well do they actually work at protecting your anonymity? The public proxy sites put the proxies into three categories, and I take it to trust "Highly Anonymous" as opposed to transparent.

I've tested proxies from many different countries, and even the ones within the US don't seem to work hardly at all.

Any ideas?

http://getus.in works completely fine for me. But I'm in sweden so I don't know if it'll work for ya. Try it. I use it everyday, works perfect
