questions about upgrades.

im looking to updade my old gamer into a new gamer. right now i have a abit it7-max2 mother board with a geforce 4 ti4600. when i bought it like 2-3 years ago it was a good gamer but know its a bit outdated and i cant paly bf2 so im looking to upgrade some things. im looking to get either a radeon x700-800 256mb, radeon 9600 256mb or a geforce 256 or 512mb. i know that the best ones is probally going to be the 512 but i herd that bf2 doesnt work with geforces is that correct? i could probally get a 512mb off ebay for pretty cheep. i was also looking to get more ram. i dont know what type to get but i know i want at least a gig or more. i want this to be a good gamer that will last me. so mabe 1024mb memmory? i already have a pentium 4 cpu with heat sink. what else should i upgrade to make this a great gamer? i have an alabatron 17' lcd screan i think so im good with a screen.also what is a good website to buy off of? i herd and saw the prices on ibuypower.com and they look pretty good for the price. does anyone know if there good or not or know an even better online store? also whats the difference between amd and intel?.

read Video Card 101 somtimes its just better to get a higher end card thats 256mb than a lowerend card thats 512mb.

read Ram 101 and yes 1gb of ram is good enough.
also whats the difference between amd and intel?.
amd is better for games. and intel for work stuff
explains it more in CPU 101

from my understanding ibuypower builds comps that you customize. but dont you just want to upgrade? or want a whole new comp?
a good place to buy just parts is newegg.com

well i was saying at the prices on ibuypower for a whole new comp i would just sell mine and for about the same amount of money i would be paying to up grade i could get a whole new comp. im looking to spend 200-300 or mabe less. what card do you guys recomend? i figure i can get an x700 or 800 off ebay for like... 130 or less and how mutch does a gig of ram run? how do i tell what type of ram i need?

You are in the place I was a while ago.
I agree with the person above me, read all the '101' guidesm they explain a lot.
Whereever you heard BF2 will not with geforces is the biggest mistake I've ever heard. Geforce is a line of cards made by Nvidia one of the two biggest companies. It depends on the card, not the company. I would advise the 6600 line, or above to play games at a good standard.
I used to think the more memory the card runs at the better. Not always true.
A radeon 9800 pro 128mb is better than a 9250 265mb. Because of the core clock speed, the memory speed and the bandwidth and even more factors!
jsst read reviews and search aroud on the internet, thats what I did. And now I am a genius at computers (well slight overstatement:D ).
For ram, I would advise 512mb as a minimum, preferably 1024mb it will imporve general system performacnee expecially gaming, and ram prices are quite low these days. I am unsure, however, on that brand to choose, just research them. The screen is fine. Remember the 3 main factors that affect gaming performance are, video card, cpu, memory ( Generally in that order).
Againg search around for onlien computer shops. As you are looking to buy only certain parts and not a full system, newegg.com is good. (bear in midn they do not ship internationally).

I hope this answers all (if not most) of your questions. Any more queries, just ask.

wait, are you saying 200-300 for the whole computer or for the graphics card?
Battlefield 2 does work with Geforce cards.

the x700 or the x800. all of the stats look the same except the 700 is running dual ramdacs at 400 mhz each. the x800 is running 490mhz. what does that mean the 700 is running? what should i buy the 700 or 800?

ok well i looked up on my motherboard and it says its an agp so ill get agp but when i looked i dont think they make radeon x800xl agp. so if they dont have the xl im going to get the x700 pro agp its basacally the same as the x800xl but its got less clock speed.
