Questions about Win XP 64-bit

I'm looking into buying a new computer and I have an option of getting a Pentium 4 630 64bit processor. I am not familiar with the whole 64 bit aspect and was wondering what you all would recommend. What are the pros and cons?

I was also wondering if buying a 64 bit processor forces you to install the win xp 64 bit version rather than the "normal" xp version.

Also, what are the disadvantages in terms of software compatibility? Will all XP compatible programs run on win xp 64bit?

And what about Windows Vista? Does it play a future role in that?

Thank you all for your input.

I would say wait for Core 2 Duo, Don't get a Pentium 4

No

No

Yes

Honestly I think XP Pro x64 is horrible. The major companies make 64-Bit drivers, however there are alot of other brands that aren't so popular that dont have any 64-Bit drivers, and that can cause problems with some PCI cards and motherboards.

For the most part all games and programs will run, just in 32-Bit mode. But there are some programs that wont install at all.

Looks like I'll be passing on the 64 bit processor pentium pc. The more I look into it, the less I see my need for a 64 bit processor especially when I consider the quirks and lack of compatability issues I would run into.

I guess I could just run the win xp 32 bit version on it, but why do that if I wouldn't be taking advantage of the 64 capabilities?

If anyone wants to add more input, I'd be glad to learn some more. If not, then I'll close with a thank you to: shadyi, benjamin336, and OMEGA.

All the new processors support 64-bit
you'll be running in 32-bit mode JUST FOR NOW
but in future everything is going to support 64-bit so you'll need one

You should still get a 64-Bit processor, since the upcoming Vista will support it, and more programs will be using that instead of 32-Bit.

The differences between 32-Bit and 64-Bit performance wise are virtually indistinguishable, and unless you're running complex mathematical programs you wont notice anything.

Hm, so I guess it would make sense then to get one and in the mean time treat is as a 32 bit processor in terms of OS and applications.

Thanks for the update info.

Did You Ever Get Any Answers To Your Question???

I Was just wondering if you ever got any answers to your question. I am looking to do the same thing. I just installed a Core2Duo Processor that will allow me to upgrade to a WinXP 64bit OS and the thing is that I have many many software programs that are proprietary to the tasks that I intend to do, I need these programs and some if not all of them are older (maybee 2 to 6 years old) that still work perfectly on Windows XP but I am scared that they will not work on the WinXP 64bit??? How can I tell? What did you ever learn in your efforts to research the same issue??? You can email me at [email protected] Please forward any links or help that you can as I am very very interested in your findings on this subject.

Thanks so very much,
