Questions Regarding SLI, And SLI Mobo

Hi. I was GOING to buy an 8800GTS for $320, but I already have an 8600GT, and I figured it would be smarter to buy another 8600GT and go SLI. The only problem is that my motherboard only has 1 PCI-E x16 slot and is not SLI compatible. I have a question.

Is it possible to go SLI with two different branded graphic cards (MSI 8600GT OC Edition, XFX 8600GT)

Thanks!

As far as I'm concerned yes you can go SLI with 2 different brands of cards. However in your current situation, I would advise against SLI. The reason is simple, the 8600GT even in SLI won't be a match against a 8800GTS.

You would actually get better performance with an ATI 3850, 3870 than a SLI'ed 8600GT, so the 8800GTS or even the 8800GT which both perform same or better than the 2 ATI cards I mentionned. And let alone the fact u'd have to get a new mobo and possibly a new PSU.

My suggestion is to try to sell your current GPU and get another more performant one.

To have to buy a new board and a 8600GT just to run 2 8600GT in SLI is a waste of money. Like said above you would be better off selling your 8600GT or keep it for a backup and get a 3850-3870-8800GS-8800GT or even a 9600GT.

Don't run the 8600's in SLI. Like Stranglehold said, you'd need a mobo with an nVidia chipset. Besides, you would receive better performance with a single 8800 GTS.

I think 3870 is better than 8800GS... Not sure...

using 2 sli 8600's in sli is not worth it with that type of a card for example you would see a bigger improvement if you used most any 8800 card in sli
