Is it possible either by connecting two computers together via network or directly through a network cable to play a file off of my girlfriends laptop on my desktop?

I need to play a windows movie maker file from her laptop on my desktop.

Yep - provided you both have ethernet ports, you can connect them directly together and share files.
And btw, a Windows Movie Maker file relies on all the video/audio files being in the same place, so it won't play on your desktop unless you transfer all of the files too.
It would be easier to finish the movie and save it as an AVI or Mpeg etc

Well I need to leave the file on her computer but play it on mine off of hers....does that make sense? Are there any special settings to consider when plugging in through ethernet?

Yeah - is the file you are talking about a video file or a Windows Movie Maker Project file?

Its a project file. I need to play it off of her computer onto mine.

Yeah - it won't play on your computer unless you also share the video and audio files used in making the project file, if that makes sense. I would just advise finishing it to a video file such as an AVI or Mpeg and then playing it over the network link.

If I save it as AVI will it open in windows movie maker 2 on my desktop? Basically, I need to burn this file to a dvd but her computer crashes when we try to do it. I figured mine should be able to handle burning it better.

No - that could be a problem.
However, you can still burn the AVI file to a DVD using other software if you only want to use it as a video file to view.

Well the dvd player will play the dvds i have, its just a matter of making sure the progrm can burn an AVI into the format to play on the dvd players
