QUICK - Lapop Advice needed - for editing, etc.

Okay, so I'm sick and tired of my current desktop. It's great for my internet browsing, my music, my Instant Messenger and storing things, etc. But I can't do ANY editing, graphic design, audio edit, website design, etc without it lagging up and having the programs freeze.
I'm getting sick and tired of this.

The latest I got for an audio editing program completely freezes at 9% loading each time I try using it.

Now what I would like help with is finding something nice and cheap, a laptop, that can handle graphic and audio editing so I can make videos and audio files for things such as Youtube, etc. I don't need anything over the top fancy, something within a nice budget that won't break the pocket/bank.

Please keep in mind I'm semi-computer illiterate in terms of hardware.
I'm also in Canada, so things from Canadian sites in CAD would be very much appreciated.
I'm hoping to find something quick so I can pass it along to mom as a quick Christmas gift idea.

Any idea on a rough budget?

i'm in Ontario...where you?

I'm in Saskatchewan.

I'm trying to think of a budget... I'm guessing I'll just decide on one once I see some ideas. I just want something that is nice and powerful for editing all sorts of things and won't lag and freeze up, but isn't all money hungry... I'd like to get back into that stuff.

Dang, I know you probably want something new, but if you lived closer I'd sell you my old Toshiba. When I say old I mean like 2 years old..he he.

I'm not sure what so suggest as I buy from a local shop owned by my close friends--but if you want I can send you the shop info.

I'm not sure how good/bad newegg canada is...

Hey, do you have a futureshop near you?

There are a ton of good laptops there that could work for you,

do you want 15", 16", 17" screen?

There are tons of them with dual core processors, pretty much all have 4GB ram some have more, 64-bit win7, and the graphics and hard drive capacity varies.

320GB-500GB good for you?

the prices for decent machines with 15" start at like 400 bucks, and go up from there.

New or used, it doesn't matter as long as it's trustworthy and gets the job done. As I'm short on money to spend at the moment, I was kind of aiming for a possible gift idea to give to my parents, though I doubt they'd get me it anyway.

Maybe we can work things out. Tell me about this laptop, that is, if you don't mind shipping? Shop info could also be good, I s'pose.

Yeah we have one in the city here. Mind linking me to a few of them so I can look them over and maybe write some of the names and such down to show my mom over the week.

And I have a 15 inch screen (node wide) for my desktop, it's decent, but also kinda annoying at times. What would you say is a decent size, especially for editing, etc? Would you say a 15 inch is good, are they widescreen?

That HDD should be great, likely more than enough.

15 is good, 16 is good..they all are widescreen at FS.

I'm just recommending FS cause they are big, local, and you can actually go in the store and see them in person, rather than just looking at a pic on a website!

17" is nice, but the price goes up, weight goes up, and its less convenient--more of a desktop replacement than a portable computer!

Give me a sec here while I browse through the website and see what you might wanna take a live peak at--

You know what, i'm not seeing alot on FS that I think would make sense for you..:(

Either they skimped on one thing or another, or its at a price range that probably wont make sense!

If you can wait till after xmas, there will def. be deals, and also, once u know a budget I can check with my friends at the shop here and see what can be had.

I know he had a number of ASUS laptops that were very well appointed, and the prices were decent..

but decent to me and someone else might be a ways apart!

I wish I had found something.,.but I dont want to recommend something i dont feel strongly about.

Nah, that's cool. I can likely wait until after Christmas, actually. I don't know exactly what I'm getting from the family, so I might be getting cash which I can put toward a good little editing laptop.

I appreciate your honesty.

no prob, I was thinking at first there was alot of options but I just didn't think they would suit you for what you said you wanted.

wait for the sales! and if you still have trouble keep me posted and I'll talk to my buddy and see about a deal for you on an asus laptop or similar!

Alright. Now.. I'm trying to think of how to explain what exactly I'd like from the laptop and the kind of editing I wish to be doing. Would that help you out at all?

well, I've seen some nice pictures you've taken..you must be into photography..?

Do you use photoshop? what other programs?

And I know you want it to be quick..thats what everyone wants, cause really we've all had slow comps..and it sucks when you can go make a pot of coffee, flip through some channels on the tv, get a cup of coffee...come back and its still grinding!! (exagerrated i know)

Easiest thing would be to know a budget..then its easy to pick a few ideas.

Well I have some Macromedia programs (Fireworks, Flash, Dreamweaver), and I haven't edited my photos since my computer is all dsfhadksjfh when I try. I also have an older photoshop kicking around.

As for audio programs, I'm just trying out a variety of different demos at the moment, which tonight proved to me I need a laptop dedicated just for the use of editing.

I'd like to get back into my graphic designing ideas. Webpage builds, photo editing, video and audio as well.

Programs are various.
