i recently picked up a FREE tower pc.... i want to make a budget gamer out of...
its 1.8ghz,2.0usb,blah blah, with 10gb(lol,yes 10gb) and 256mbRAM...it was used for pictures and internet by my grandparents!but they bought a dell cause they were mad that they paid money to upgrade it and it wasnt fast enough for them...probably cause all the guy did was give them a new case, motherboard, and cpu.....running some piss hd and ram, with a cr-rom 50x....
i looked up the mother board and its 2gb ram expandable. so yah,im just gonna buy a big HD,2gigs of ram,dvd-rw,and a 200.00 video card undecided, led fan,and a 19inch flat screen.

currently the computer is running win98.....i just want to put XP on while i make progress with the upgrades.anyways heres my questions

1)since the motherboard is 2gb expandable, 2700/333mhz.... can i put two 1gb stickk without problems.....i know 1gb is like 1024 mb,so wouldnt that add up to more than 2gb????
2) should i use the 52000rpm 10gb just to run the OS. and use the other for storage and game files etc.....or should i just use a nice 7200-10000rpm 160-200gb HD for the whole thing???basically would it hurt my performance,im just trying to get the most out of this machine.

3) if i do replace the HD, can i just pop in the ram, plug in the ide and power and tunr on the computer and boot up xp?????i have a boot CD!

Yeah it will all work fine, I'd just scap the 10G HD and add 250G and install Winxp Or vista, Should work fine, A new Processor would be good though. Or a whole knew computer.

To answer your questions,
1) 2GB means 2048MB so you should be fine putting 2 of 1GB stick. ;)
2) Use a 7200RPM HD, size is up to you.
3) If everything is compatible, you should be fine with just plugging in the components.

In my opinion, depending on the specs of the computer right now before upgrade, you might end up paying for a whole new build. If that is the case, like holdenssx had said, its not worth it. Try looking up the specs and post them here so that we can give a better suggestions.

Cheers. :)

yeah, i dont think its worth it...

Will it support anything higher than a Sempron 2800?
