How many different types of optical drive connections are there for laptops?

I'm trying to figure out if Slim IDE is the only one, or the most common one..

i am assuming you are talking about hard drives, not CD/DVD drives. there is IDE and SATA. IDE is being replaced by SATA because of better data capabilities, and most if not all new laptops are equipped with them.
