Quick question on DDR2 speeds

On DDR2 memory do I divide the shown speed by 2, i.e. 800/2=400, or by 4, since its double data rate 2? (Yes, I know newbie question) any clarification (sp? im tired) would be helpful :)

Yeah, divide it by two. the only reason it is shown as 800 instead of 400, is because of dual channel (or something like that)... :rolleyes:

Not that I think about it, it isn't necessarily two. Because you can set different memory dividers, such as 2.5 and 3.0, etc... In which case you would divide it by the memory multiplier you have set in the BIOS.
 
The rated speed (such as DDR2-800) is divided by two to find the actual frequency.

DDR2-800 runs at 400Mhz
DDR2-667 run at 333Mhz
DDR400 run at 200Mhz

etc, etc.

Rambo, you're thinking about how the memory frequency is determined. For example, my memory divider is 2:1, and my FSB is running at ~284. So using a 2:1 divider, the memory is set to ~143Mhz (DDR286).

ddr2 question

i plan on getting a intel core 2 duo 1.86 ghz and overclocking it so should i buy overclocking ddr2 or should i buy regular ddr2 ram

What do you mean "overclocking ram"? Do you mean high end RAM?

It's really a matter of preference and if your budget allows to spend an extra $100 or so for some higher quality RAM.
 
well

i want to build a pc but its gonna be ddr2 ram it supports and i was gonna get a 1.86 ghz core 2 duo and overclock it to 3.2ghz or higher if i do that will i need overclocking ddr2 since when i overclock my ram is gonna overclock at the same time right?
 
ddr2 533 would run 1:1 with a 1066mhz fsb.
with AMD ddr2 800 bottlenecks. lol
hypertransport >>> fsb by alot...
though memory speed has never been a big deciding factor in how applications perform.

lol my ram is rated at ddr2 667 but it runs fine at ddr2 800 4-4-4-12... patriot isnt the best brand for overclocking but i was lucky lol
either way get two gigs.

do you do a lot of gaming? if you do then the video card will be the biggest investment of the whole rig...
they have direct x 10 cards on the market but theyre very costly at the moment, personally im going to wait til there are at least some direct x 10 games out before i get one.

yeah i do gaming

yeah i do gaming and plan on using it for gaming and surfing the web thats mainly what i do and i plan on possibly doing some stuff with dvd decoding or encoding possibly
 
I would certainly recommend getting the Corsair XMS2 5400c4 or 6400c4 RAM.

If you want to overclock to speeds of 3.0Ghz plus, you're going to need RAM which likes to be overclocked. And as the E6300 only has a max 7x multiplier, you're relying on the FSB to be pretty high (430Mhz and up for 3.0Ghz).
