I have an ASUS p4p800se

it has 4 slots for ddr and is supposed to run up to 3200

i am interested in upgrading from my pc 3200 512 x2

i know i cant go any faster than the 3200 unless i OC but i think i want to buy ddr500

i am confident i wont be able to get any higher than 250 on the bus speed anyway and its not really too expensive comparaed to the 3200

ok so heres the question

is it better for me to buy 2 1gb ddr500 sticks and plug those in

or 4 512kb sticks and plug those in

if i go with the 2 1gb sticks ill dump the 1gb of 3200 i have

i have read in the past something aobut using 4 sticks makes it so you cant run in DDR? or double sided?

maybe that was specific to the p4p800se?

also what memory have you had good luck with? should i look for higher than the ddr500?

You cant have DDR500 memory in a board that only allows up to PC3200. It will either decrease the speed to PC3200 or wont work at all.

hmmm

I wanted to OC the board up to a bus of around 250mhz

will the ram still default back down to 3200 when i try to oc it?

Hmm... I dont really now what geoff meant, but, if your motherboard can match it, its usualy a good idea to get higher DDR if your overclocking. But alot of TCCD DDR400 chips can overclock well also. What RAM are you getting? Thats a P4 platform so most high performance DDR1 modules dont do so well on P4's because they are designed for the A64 memory controller.

havent really picked out a memory brand yet

I went with the corsair value last time i bought it and thats kind of why i needt obbut it again so i really dont know much about which brand is good yet

So then its ok to run pc4000 on a 3200 board?

I know itll default down to 3200
but when you OC it the ram shouldnt be your upper limit anymroe as it is now

I can only get about 200mhz out of my p4 3.0
