Quick Question...

I just ordered a 20 pin main MB.

I was wondering if a 20+4 pin PSU will work with it- or do I need some kind of adapter... or worse yet, do I have to order a 20 pin PSU?

My dumb ass ordered this MB, Vid card, and PSU... you can see my problem:

Requires a 12V connection

Only 1 12V connection...


I guess I needed a PSU with dual 12V cons, right? Well, my question stems from ordering a new PSU. The majority are 20+4 pin that have dual 12V... will a 20+4 work with my Mobo?

I don't totally understand your question. Looking over those parts everything looks fine. The only problem I see is that the PSU is rather weak(only 22A on the 12v rail...)

Anyway, the PSU says that it's not "dual 12V". I took that to mean that it will only power the MB and not the vid card (the vid card says it requires a 12V connection).

In any case, I ordered this PSU:

It says that it's a 20+4, so my question really is... will it work with my MB that's a 20 pin?

P.S. How do the stats on the new PSU look?

Oh yeah, NewEgg said to just send the other PSU back and they'll refund my money.

No no no, you are really confused.
  1. Yes, you are a mess :P
  2. Dual 12V means that it has 2 12v lines....something found in higher end power supplies, don't worry about understanding it, because it has nothing to do with compatibility
  3. It has separate connections for the motherboard, video card, hdds, etc.
  4. The video card does require a 12v connection, but the fact that the PSU is not "dual 12v" doesn't mean that it can't power the video card.

20+4 means that it will work with both 20-pin and 24-pin motherboards, which would include pretty much every mobo made in the last 9 years

P.S. How do the stats on the new PSU look?

Much better than the old one. You will see that it does have dual 12v, meaning that it has 2 12v lines, and higher amperage ratings.

I hope I didn't confuse you more :rolleyes:
 
yea that +4 connector is actually detachable from the 20 pin main connector so its perfectly fine as bobo said...i've actually had my old mobo hooked up like that

The +4 connector is not the same as the 12V 4-pin connector, make sure you don't get the 2 confused.
