Hi guys, bare with me as im not that hot on computers!

I am a Dja dn light and sound technitian for theatres and clubs, and on my desktop i have about 5,000 songs i would like to transfer onto my laptop. What is the cheepest and easiest way to transfer only these onto my laptop hard drive, without transfering everything accross? Can i connect the desktop with the laptop via a simple usb cable and select what i want to transfer?

Thanks in advance
Rich

you could network them and transfer them over, but personally i would just write them to a dvd-r and copy them to your laptop. (thats if you have a dvd writer and a dvd drive in your laptop).

Yer i do, but 5,000 songs is alot of time! I do have them networked for the internet, my laptop has a wifi feature built in, and my desktop has a router, but how do i transfer them accross, i have only used the network for wireless internet?

if both computers are networked through wi-fi already go to my computer then my network places

no, the easiest way is to buy a 3-6ft ethernet cable, connect them in the LAN ports (looks like an enlarged phone chord) and then setup a simple network between the two. then, share the folder of songs and drag and drop them to your laptop. within an hour or less all of the song should be transferred :) (depending on hard drive speed, and other factors).
also, make sure your laptop has a nice sound card, which im sure it does :)
if it doesn't, you can buy an external one ! :)

Oh yes! :P I have ran dance concerts with a 11kw pa system using this soundcard! Oh and it is external! Why is it easier to use lan than wifi to transfer them? Finally how do i set up a network between them via lan?

Sorry, my main tecnical expertees goes into lighting and sound systems!

Cheers Guys

You need to set up file and printer sharing. Just right click on a folder you want to share, click properties and then select the Sharing tab. Then select the box "Share this folder on the network". :) You will also need a folder that is shared on the other computer so that you have a shared folder to transfer the files to...

Ok, i have now shared the folder i want to share on the desktop so how do i pick it up on my laptop now? I am pretty sure that it is sharing on the desktop as there is a hand under the folder.

Thanks

make sure both computers are on the same workgroup, by default windows has them on WORKGROUP, but sometimes its diffrent, like MSHOME, or LINKSYS... but check this by right clicking "My Computer" then click on the "Computer Name" tab, just make sure they both have the same workgroup ID, if not click on the bottom thing that says "Change" and type what the other computer says.... next, restart both computers... then after they are booted, click on "My Network Places" and you should see your shared folder in there, if not, let me know
