Quicktime & Windows Media Player

Does anyone know how to make my videos downloaded from the internet open in Windows Media Player instead of Quicktime player...
it's starting to annoy me lol

you uninstall windows media player, reinstall it and then it will automatically set as your main media player.

it's kinda like when you first install firefox, and it asks if you want it to be your main internet browser. yup.. kinda like that

i had the same problem a while back only that when i was dling videos from people and places, the icon was unreadable (the default 'blank' icon). a quick reinstallation of windows media player fixed that right up.

oh! and make sure, when they give you a list of media formats (examples: .avi,.mov,.mp3,.wma,.mpeg), to choose EVERY ONE that is readable by windows.

and if you happen to download an .avi file, or any other compressed, non-stream video format....... you'll need to download a codec (a translator, so-to-speak). i got one that reads allot of em (i only know .avi and .dvd). it's called AVICodecPackPlus21 and it's free. i know some better codec packages that cover basically every type of compressed format, but they cost some pecuniae

1. Change file assoiciation to Windows Media Player. Contrary to the above post, WMP can still play MOV files
2. Control Panel -> Classic Interface -> Add/Remove Programs -> Set program access and defaults -> windows media player

To get #1 to work without having quicktime (which is good, quicktime is crap), install QuickTime Alternative

quicktime is a beaotch to the core, only good if you come across a .mov video that you want to watch (they are all mostly spam and junk, at least on the Gnutella network) (i know there are other types of formats that only quicktime can play, formats that noone knows about, but bear with the hyperbole)

quicktime has a startup program that i suggest deleting, called qttask.exe

go to start > run > type "msconfig" > go to startup and unclick that memory-wastin bastard!

All in a good, light-hearted fashion, of course

Post Scriptum: btw... my brother claims that windows 8 has better sound than windows 10. windows 10 also has songs organized by albums, which are annoying. there is more eye candy in windows media player 10.. i dono if my brother's claim is true (he is obsessed with sound/speakers/gaming with sound...), so i suggest to stick with the 8. and if you're wondering what happened to 9.. well 9 was designed primarily for xp service pack 1, but since they have 2 out, they want everyone with media player 10, which is compadable with only service pack 2 (this was a bitch because back in the day i had an unactivated [i couldnt activate it without wasting 100-200 bucks on a goddamn cd] service pack 1, couldnt update it to a service pack 2, so i couldn't get the latest version, not even 9!). i have an obsession of having the latest version of everything... dont ask. the reason 8 is still out there is because it's the latest version that windows 2000/nt supports.

at first i didn't realize quicktime alternative was a codec. i was gonna start yelling and screaming and whining (polysyndeton) that windows can't play .mov videos.

yes!! make quicktime obsolete!! whoot!

Do realize if you are interested in transcoding MOV to something more sane like AVI, nvidia's 9xxx drives are, for some god unknown reason, going to interfere with the audio (i.e., no idea stream). There are workarounds tho :)

I liked WMP8 the most :)
