I need a graphics card, and the guys in this forum have been really helpful before so i gots a question for yous lots.
Im thinking gtx 260. BUT is it quiet, im going to be doing a lot of audio production on this computer so if its going to be incredibly noisome then il have a rethink. Or ar there any better cards around the same price that are quiet?

any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks
JBS

Its also for video work using adobe premiere pro and after effects. and animation with flash, and probably blu ray playback in the future. I dont tend to play games but it would be nice to have the option, and £130 seems a reasonable amount to spend on a card

If you don't need a lot of graphics processing power then you can go with a low/mid ranged card that's passively cooled, which won't make any noise.

I build DAW's. The only time we use a bus mounted video card is when the customer want's multiple monitor support and the mainboard doesn't have it. Otherwise we use the on-board video which is overkill for audio production. If you want a bus-mounted card just get one without a fan. There are all kinds of them. We typically use a couple of models from ASUS and Sapphire but any of them will do.

yeah my motherboard doesnt have any onboard video so i will need a seperate card, and would like the option of using a dual monitor set up, it just makes workflow so much better with cubase.

Like i said, im also doing video editing work and animation, does a good graphics card help with that?

A 9600GT or, if you want a little more power, 9800 GT should be adequate, depending on how intensive the 3D stuff you do is.

Ok thanks I think Il go with the 9600 then. I dont think the 9800 comes in a heatsink or fanless version. My computer is mega quiet at the moment, and I dont want to spoil that.

That is probably the right performance card but it might be better to go with either a dual slot solution or a better card with a dual slot cooler. My stock 8800GT fan was crazy noizy and hummed on anything above 45% fan speed. Installed a dual slot cooler and my computer is silent.

You could also go for the 9600GT and install an aftermarket cooler. The Zalman VF-900 has great reviews in terms of sound. It comes with a fan controller.
