Hi everyone. My friend received this quote for a PC from a local computer shop for his business. All he will be doing on this computer is using Microsoft Office. What do you think?

Total: $1260

Dell Optiplex minitower
i7-6700
8gb ram
AMD Radeon R5 340X 2GB w/ DisplayPort and DVI-I
500gb Serial ATA
Windows 7 pro 64bit
Office Home & Business
No monitor included

The quote does not say anything about labor. I am not sure if that is included in the total or not. Is he getting ripped off here?

Thanks!

Personally, I would not spend 1.2k on a Dell.

Are you from the states? (prices do differ by quite a lot depending on which country you're in)

That's gouged a lot for those specs. For 1.2k you can build with a significantly better video card and SSD .

For 2d or productivity environments just use the onboard video. Also, he would see the same office productivity with an i5 or i3

He doesnt neef that spec for MS office.
Why dont going directly to dell?

Probably i5 with 8GB RAM to last next 5 years?

Hell yes (pardon my French).

The specs aren't bad, but for the price, that is insane.

I put together a parts list comparable to this just to give an example of the gouging going on here:

So this parts list skimps on motherboard and case, but I can't imagine a place recommending a 6700 for Office, putting much thought in either of those components. Not to mention this GPU is likely better than the R5 340X by a wide margin.

Putting price gouging aside, the actual components in this build are pretty damn extreme for "just Office."

That i7 is a nice gaming chip, but that's some crazy overkill for Office. And why even get a GPU if Office is all that he'd be doing? Aside from gaming or multiple monitor set-ups, graphics cards don't make much sense. 500GB HDD? That sounds a bit small these days, but if he's just using Office then I suppose that could be argued.

In short, this is price gouged out the wazoo, and the components are complete and total overkill for what you've told us he needs to do anyway.

Holy Jesus.. for $1200 I'd be expecting a much better machine then that.

High end i7 cpu with a $20 video card, and old mechanical HDD, and windows 7, I'd wager this was either pieced together for scrap, or someone assembled this machine with the intention to WOW someone with the CPU and screw them on the rest.

I'd run, run, run.. but first give a swift kick in the nuts to the ripoff artist trying to sell your buddy that rig..

Complete and utter rip off.

Not bad for an office PC, but for a $1,260 computer it should be 16GB.

AMD Radeon R5 340X 2GB w/ DisplayPort and DVI-I
Effectively the performance of internal graphics. No need for a dedicated card anyways for office tasks.

500gb Serial ATA
This was standard a decade ago. In 2016, this is pure garbage.

Windows 7 pro 64bit
Why are they shipping this with such an old OS? Since then, Windows 8 has come and gone, Windows 8.1 has come and gone, and Windows 10 has been here for a little while now.

No monitor included

Yes. An office PC, even pre-built can easily be found for $500-$750.

Would never buy a $1,200 PC that only had a low-end graphics card like that in it.

Also @Origin Saint you should be able to do better than an R7 370 for around $1,000 but I imagine the i7 took most of the budget up.

YES total rip off for just MS office. A $150 HP stream can run office and browse the internet. granted they only come in blue and pink and the specs are pretty restricting... You'd probably be just as good off going to Sams or something and buying a desktop or all in one off the shelf... basically any new computer in 2016 can run MS office...

The only possible thing you would want that might stand out just to run office would be an SSD. I don't understand why they aren't standard yet in off the shelf PC's but it makes a huge difference in boot time and opening files and programs.
