QVL for Asus P5B

Just bought an Asus P5B Motherboard, do i have to buy the recommended Ram from the QVL list or will any compatible Ram do?

The ram on the QVL is gauranteed to work with that board. Alot of people are having problems by buying other ram. Your best bet to avoid any ram issues is to buy whats on the list. I, myself wouldn't want to wait to get new ram if the original ram wouldn't work with my board. :)

If you pick DDR2 modules that run @1.8V it will work. There should be updated BIOSs shipping on these boards by now that will let them work out of the box with a lot more non 1.8V RAM.

You don't have to pick RAM off the QVL, plently of other RAM works. I'm not sure what, if any, stores sell Hynix/Micron brand RAM. I thought they were both mostly (if not solely) an OEM supplier meaning they supply RAM to companies like Dell.

Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/) is the end-user division of Micron. I don't know what Hynix's end-user brand is called.

That kingston should be fine.

There were a lot of problems with all 965 based boards with RAM with specs that say they require more than 1.8V. I even had trouble with 1.9V RAM that boots fine at 1.8V. Most of these problems will have been worked out with BIOS releases.
