Radeon 4870 X2 or GTX 295?

Which one should I buy? It's a $150 price difference... ATI is cheaper.

I know the GTX 295 outperforms it, but I also heard it doesn't support Direct X 10.1 and the difference in FPS may not be worth $150 more?

also depends on your monitor resolution gaming, what res you play at? if higher than 1920x1200 then go with the 4870x2; also that 150 is a big price difference so.

what kind of motherboard do you have? perhaps a pair of 4890's would be better?

there are some overclocked 4890's when in crossfire are able to out perform the 295..

do what im going to do, buy one 4890 then buy the other when you have free cash

How does the 4890 compare to the GTX 295 by itself? I actually might take the suggestion of just buying one of those and then buy another when the price drops.

About half as much as a GTX295, as the 4890 is a singlecard that competes with the GTX275.

I'm not sure if I read this wrong or misunderstood you. But it will not have half the performance of the 295 just because it is a single card. It doesn't scale nearly that efficiently. It will give you some more headroom for sure, but will not perform nearly twice as well as the 4890. But yeah, I would also say that you should go for the 4890 and eventually get a new one.

This is cheaper, and will prolly clock just as well:

Referring to theoretical shading power in FLOPS, some games do sale well into the 1.8-1.9 over singlecard range, while some scale almost none. Should have clarified that.

The 4870 X2 is only 50 dollars more than gtx 285 and according to reviews outperforms it by a good margin.

It does, mainly because its a double gpu card. Plus theres always quadfire if you wanna upgrade in the future, just slap in another 4870x2.

yeah, but if you are gaming not all games support dual GPUs. So a lot of games will only play with a single GPU of the 4870 where as a 285 would be way better than that. But yes there are those games that would run better with dual gpus.

For WoW, Left 4 Dead, Star Wars: The Old Republic (not out yet), GTA IV, etc... which card is better? I'm so confused. Lol, there's so many cards...
