A friend of mine wants to buy a copy of COD4 for his machine:

3.6ghz pentium 4
2GB 400mhz ram
Radeon 9800xt 256mb

He doesnt want to download the demo, since he has a 200kbps dsl line. Does anyone know if the game would even boot up? If so, can it run cod on atleast low settings with a decent framerate?

You probably start up which it should easy enough. Just avoid the latest 8.2 catalysts and go for an older 5.12 or 5.13 version for the older card there. Your friend shouldn't have too much of a problem running the game at a 1280x1024 resolution depending on what size monitor is used. For wide screen 1182x862 if not 1440x900 will easily work.

I seriously have my doubts that a 9800XT can run COD4 at 1280x1024. The 9800XT performs a bit worse then the 6600GT.

If she doesn't want to download the demo, then are you able to download it and put it on a disk for her? It's better then wasting $30-$40.

COD4 wont run on a 9800....because it needs Pixel shader 3.0 i think and the 9800 only has 2.0.

COD4 wouldnt start on my 9600 pro AGP

do what omega said copy it to a disk and try it that way instead of spending the money to find out it doesnt work but if it does then your good to go

I got it to work on my 9550. Albeit, only for 5 minutes because it was on 800 X 600 and everything on it's lowest. So it is possible, it just depends on how much of a gaming experience you want.

I'm not surprised a bit. I ran various Steam games on the ATI 9550 256mb AGP on an old build here some time back at 1280x1024 with the details set high. That was also the case with the Radeon X1300Pro on the next build.

The higher end cards will see the antiliasing and antisostropics over the low end card seen there. Yet you could take just about any of these games and still run them.

I remember my X1300PRO, good times, good times... NOT! I hated that card...

It wasn't a high end model by any means but I never had problems running any games at 1280x1024. Initially there were more problems seen with the newer mid range HD 2600XT 512mb card due to the Catalyst 7.9 goof by ATI there. For strictly gaming alone then you would be looking frame rates, pixel shaders, and everything else seen in a higher end gaming card.

Those will also be the ones looked at for ocing over a low to mid range model. For the older AGP models on the other the Catalyst 5.11 worked best for gaming while a recent look at guru3d for that only saw the 5.12 and 5.13 versions there.

Sure it will run. The advantage of running between 1 and 5 FPS is that you can run out and make a sandwich or grab a drink between scenes. Half Life 2, a Steam game, will not run worth a damn on a 9550, so I have no idea what that's all about.

i had a 9250 and it was my first bought video card on my previous computer and i played css on high and i could play bf2 on high with little problems it was a decent little card but im so glad to have my 8800<3

With any of the games out you first look at the minimum requirements and go a little hgiher to see just about any of them run without the need for the highest price model out at any given time. When you go to plan a new build then you look at options for how the system will be used whether strictly gaming or occasional where the top model out is often found to be an overkill.
