I need to pick one. Wich one would you choose.
Please don't pick the brand. I don't want to hear "9600GT because I like Nvidia" or something. I just want to play the best games in as good quality as possible and I when I bought one, I want to buy the next one as far in the future as possible, so I don't want to need another new one soon.

8800GS... I think it's both cheaper and better than both. BTW, what are you going to spend? 8800GT's have dropped in price alot; you could get one for as low as $190.

8800's are still expensive in my country. Geforce 8800 384 MB cost just as much as these two cards. I don't want to spend more money than 243 dollars (160 euro's) and if possible not more that 150 dollars (100 euro's) but that doesn't same an option over here. I also don't want a worse video card if possible, so I don't get much to choose.

BTW I live in the Netherlands

save up a little more for a 8800GT.....better than both 9600 and hd3850

Well, I'm told to buy at least 512 MB and that's lots more expensive. And I already need to save lot's of money if I want to buy one of those two, I really can't afford any dollar more.

Well, if your intent on deciding between those two, get the 9600GT. Are you buying online though? We could help you find a good choice.

i am not sure how a 9600 preforms but we have a 512MB 3850 in a pentium D an it is a great card for its price.
it gets medium on crysis!

oh,I love Holand and always dream to be there.I hear about there's the most famous red light district in Amsterdam.
9600GT got better performance than 3850 due to the tests. But in Asia I can buy 3850 512MB for only $150 while 9600GT for about $199 still got no trend to depreciate.
It's all about the price,man.

Yeah omega is right, the 9600gt is the best performer if u compared to hd3850 and a good overclocker if im not wrong.

So the geforce is better, I'll take that one. They're the same price here.
Unfortunately I don't know how to overclock. (only thing I know is that I should mess with the driver, but I don't know on what buttons I should click)

The 9600 is pretty much a rehashed 8800gt, only with half the streaming processors. The frequency is high but it is a overall poor performing midrange card. The 3850 has excellent OCing potential. Pretty much nothing new with the 9600 from the 8800gt other than cheaper and a marketing ploy.

Articles on the 9600gt.

Remember the benchmarks in this are too close to call, 2fps extra is not a reason to pick a worse card in the long run. And really benchmarks show you what cards are good for what games.

Also the 3850 has more shader processors and runs a bit cooler.

Better features too for the 3850, including HDMI and HD and audio support.

My vote goes for the 3850, however it is close. Both are mid range and not expected to perform well for long. If you want what Nvidia says is the latest and greatest and a couple of FPS more, well the 9600. I would honesty go with the cheapest, if it is the 9600, so be it.

yes and no, I think. from what I see, its like the 6800GT/6800GS some years back.
the GS was a stripped down Gt on higher clocks, they performed quite close.
however the GT could overclock a big deal more, and in later games it performed better due to having more shaders etc. (correct me if I'm wrong here, it IS a long time ago after all ^^ )

Hey I found something. http://techreport.com/articles.x/14168/1
Seems I didn't need it. 9600GT seems to be better than the HD3xxx series. Only GeForce 8800 is a little faster than 9600. Seems I will have to borrow some money from my father. I hope I can get one from Amazon.com into the Netherlands, they're cheaper than we are here.

its hard to find reliable benchmarks, from everything i have seen it performs right with/between the 3850 and 3870
