radeon x800 pro on 4x agp. . .

Since HL2 is coming out soon, I want a new vid card that will have extremely good graphics in this new generations of games. I will be upgrading from a 9600 pro 128mb to either a x800 pro or a 9800 pro. However i have just found out that my mobo only has a 4x agp slot . . . makes me sad. Any how, i was wondering if this would greatly affect the performance out of these 2 videocards. I tried doing a little research and found the bench marks of a 4x 9700pro v. 8x 9700pro. In mostly everything the 8x barely out performed the 4x, only by a sliver, and in some things the 4x was better.

So my question is: is it worth buy an x800pro with on 4x agp capability? if not then should i buy or 9800pro? Thanks a lot.

Pick one -- there's a big difference.

You'll probably want to upgrade the mobo first considering 4X only mobos are fairly old.

Thats because the 9700 is old.

and in some things the 4x was better.

Thats because benchmarks are relatively meaningless and only give a general feel

No. Its not worth getting an X800Pro -- you can get the 6800GT for less and regardless of bias, the 6800GT is a better card (16 pipes vs 12 pipes, end of discussion )

If you wanna fork out $220 for somethign ... sure.... its your money but i would reccomend a new mobo first (and ram etc), HL2 isnt that intensive

personally got for the x800, the card i've got is only software locked to 12 pipelines and is easily unlocked for 16. but vack to your question 4x AGP slot tells me the mobo is old, but if ure gona be only playin Halo2 you should be ok. If you want to play something like Far Cry or Doom 3 though, you should really consider upgrading your mobo to an 8x AGP, and dont forget the RAM, make sure you have enough. The game will still be slow with an x800 and not a lot of RAM.
