Raid 0 and bios update

I have just assembled a comp on P5B deluxe and want to set my two raptor disks as a RAID-0 system (before installing OS).

My first question whether I need to update BIOS first and then set RAID and install OS, or I can update BIOS later and it should bot interfere with my RAID?

Second question is what are goods or bads of this RAID 0? Since reading from HDD takes much more time than reading from memory, I thougth if I set raid 0, system would work almost twise as fast, is it true? How volnurable will be the system and saved data?

I have two raptor 1500 disks:

I am willing to be you will not benefit from using RAID 0. It will not really increase performance for normal use, gaming, or multimedia play back. It would increase performance on loading times, and if you are working with huge files which are many gigabytes in size (3D rendering, Video Editing, Audio Editing). Otherwise RAID 0 is a waste for the basic user.

Actually it WOULD increase performance, especially with 10k RPM drives.

no it actually does not increase performance on basic things, I think the average overall basic system performance increase is less than 3% so the user won't even notice the difference.

Now, if you are working with huge amounts of data then yes you can see upwards of 40% performance increases.

However, it does not increase performance on gaming, multimedia play back, internet, or email. I am guessing this user is going to do all of that and probably not much else. Therefore running a RAID 0 would be a waste and it puts them at higher risk of data loss.

Guys, I have decided to go for it already :) Can you better tell me whether I should update BIOS now (with a e-flash utility) or do it later after installing OS?

well the BIOS on your motherboard and the BIOS on your raid controller are two different sets of BIOSes. Technically it should not matter if an OS is on the drives or not because it should not technically effect anything on the OS itself.
