RAID 1 off the same IDE cable?

Currently, I've got two hard drives on separate IDEs in RAID 1 (D: drive) as masters and two optical drives as slaves. As such, it takes forever to burn anything off my D: drive. Usually, I copy the files from D: to C: before burning anything. I was wondering what kind of performance loss I would get if I were to put the two hard drives on the same channel and the optical drives on the other. I don't need to do any on-the-fly burning, so that's not an issue. Basically, is it a bad idea to do RAID off two hard drives connected to the same IDE cable?

Hmm...Well I know under normal use it's reccomended to keep HD's and CDs on separate channels. I guess if you have different channels to use, yeah go for it.

Now, I also know when using software RAID, you MUST use different channels.

I guess it'll be a trial and error thing then. It's just that I've got all the cables tied down and neatly tucked away for better air circulation. I don't want to have to go in there and do it all over again. Thanks for the replies though.
