RAID an external drive

N. Not recommended and not possible as far as I know any way. The general idea with Raid is to increase performance or to have a copy of drive 1 (depending on the type of Raid you have setup). No matter the case the bandwidth of USB would make all types of RAID next to impossible even if you could get it to work.

Raid is used to provide redundency and speed across many drives.

Yes you can do it ... but not with usb. If you had real raid controler and a external DAS box you can do it. like a Dell MD1000 or 3000

You can do it with ESATA ... but its a bad idea. Your array will fail and you will loose it.
