Raid and Slaving Hard Drives

Hello.

I have two 300GB 7200rpm 8mb cache hard drives...
I plan on getting two 10krpm 16mb cache velociraptor hard drives.

Is raid an option? I want to use the 10k rpm hard drives for speed but the 300gb hard drives for memory? Or should I make the 7200rpm hard drives slaves?

What's the best approach for this?
 
I'm assuming all the drives are SATA so you don't have to worry about master/slave. Also, most (all?) current motherboards have 2 controllers on them so you should be fine to RAID 2 and leave the other 2 as storage. Just make sure you use the same coloured ports for the RAID drives and the other coloured ports for the non-RAID drives. If they are all the same colour read your motherboard manual to see which ports belong to which controller.
 
Yea It is up to you but it sound like you want to go Raid0+1. Stripe the raptors in Raid 0, use that for game and windows. Then use the other 2 300 in raid 1 to have redundancy in case one drive fails. With my current rig I have been experimenting with Raid 5. It is the both mixed but it needs at least 3 of the same drive to work.

You need to have 2 raid controllers to have 2 seperate arrays.

Not really no. It could just be the terminolgy you're using. 0+1 requires 4 identicle drives (well 4 drives, the total size is dependant on the smallest drive so 4 identicle drives is best). I would say a single raptor would be plenty fast but if you really want to create a raid 0 with 2 raptors you can. Then for your 2 300GB drives you can either create a seperate raid 1 array or just leave them as independant disks and have 600GB of storage. Either way you'll need to have 2 controllers.

When you have 2 seperate arrays it's not called 0+1 or 1+0 or anything like that it's just a RAID0 array and a seperate RAID1 array as opposed to a RAID1 of RAID0s or a RAID0 of RAID1s which is what 0+1/1+0 is.

I am definitely wanting to get two high-speed hard drives for performance and my 2 300GB 7200rpm hard drives I want to use for disk space...what's the best way I should accomplish this?

Let me try my last post again:

You can create a RAID0 array with your 2 raptors (however in my opinion a single raptor is pretty good). Then depending on what you need, and assuming you have another RAID controller on your motherboard or can buy an addin card, you can either create a RAID1 array of your 300GB (you would have 300GB of storage and 1 300GB drive can fail without you losing any data) drives or just connect them normally (600GB of space but if one of the 300GB drives fail you lose whatever was on it).

Does that make more sense?
 
here is a more simple way of putting it. putting drives in RAID-0 will maximize your speed, and putting in RAID-1 will back up the data from one drive to the second drive. on some motherboards, you can have both RAID-0 and RAID-1 at the same time without needing more controller cards.
