Raid Help

Hello. I'm not to skilled in the area of computers, but I do have a bunch of old hard drives that I would like to use. My friend mentioned to me about RAID arrays, and I did some preliminary research on them. However, I have some questions:

Are any of the RAID levels scalable? As in if I get it going, can I make it so that I can add more drives to the array in the future?

I was looking online for controllers, and they would let me plug in a set amount of hard drives like 2 or 4. I have also looked at a few tutorials, and they also do not go beyond the amount of drives allowed by one controller. I saw this samsung viral video about SSD cards and they made an array of 24 SSDs. I know it was all just viral, but I want something like that except with old hard drives. How was the controller part of it done?

It is usually done by buying a RAID box that includes controller and room for drives. Large arrays require expensive RAID boxes - Several thousand dollars. As an individual I would recommend two things. 1. Use a RAID 1 with two drives. If your mainboard doesn't have a controller you can install one or buy a simple external RAID box. That is more than enough for individual use and is affordable and easy to manage. 2. Forget the old drives. New drives are really cheap right now. Why subject your data to drives with a shortened life span?
