RAID Setup Opinions

Basically want some opinions on what makes most sense, pros/cons..etc

My buddy is taking my old laptop to give to his sister and he bought an Asus G75 like mine.

He has 2 Corsair Force GT 240GB SSD's like me also, and is debating on how he wants to setup his RAID.

He proposed doing two 223GB (formatted) RAID partitions over the 2 drives, rather than 1 large 447GB (formatted) RAID-0 like me.

Is having two 223GB partitions on the RAID setup ok to do, or is it opening up the door for problems?

I was actually going to do this with my laptop, but opted for the single large RAID-0.

Any input/opinions are welcome.. thanks

So basically, he did a raid 1 setup called mirroring compared to your raid 0 setup called stripping.

Raid 1 means whatever data is on one is on the other drive in case one drive fails on you. Meaning you have fault tolerance.

Raid 0 means you have the drives added together to make one big drive giving you faster read/write access but in case of a drive failure, you lose all your data.

Oh I get the two types, but I guess what he meant was when you setup the laptop, you enter RAID config screen, and build the raid volume..

Instead of making one volume that is 447GB (Raid-0), he proposed making a 223GB Raid-0 volume, and then a second 223GB Raid-0

So essentially you have tw0 223GB drives like C: & D:

I know I could have done this but I wasnt sure if it was safe/smart to do that--would it make the ssd's unstable? slower?

I know with my G75, I don't really want one huge 447GB drive, I would like to partition it in half, if its safe/beneficial.

Yeah, you can partition a raid 0 drive into smaller drives if you wish, I did. I raided 2 - 500gb drives together and partitioned them into a 75gb windows partition and the balance as a data partition.

Okay cool John..thanks man.

If I wanted to start fresh again and do a windows partition, how much space would you allot to win7.

60GB would be a good size for vista/7. they can be done as small as 40GB, but that leaves hardly any extra space.
