Uh...no... IDE drives will work in RAID! SCSI as well(which is where RAID began)

Are you sure that IDE will RAID? it must be really complicated... I would recommend using SATA drives for RAID.

I understand what RAID 0 is and does but I dont get how it simply divides the data between two or more hard drives so the data can be written to both drives at once? does half the information your saving go to 1 hd and the 1 other half goes to the other hd (assuming you have 2 hds)

It's not any harder than SATA. You just need an IDE Raid controller card, it's actually extremely easy.

I don't know the different RAID number-specs-whatever off the top of my head, but yes, I'm absolutely sure IDE will RAID on a capable motherboard. Our video system we had at my highschool was well before SATA, and it had a RAID with it's two 80G IDE disks.

Most likely the motherboard doesnt support IDE RAID< so you may need a RAID Controller. We setup some IDE raid system in our computer class, and it;s a pretty simple process.

He is most likely going to have to use hardware raid.

IT also depends if your mobo can support raid....

True, my motherboard uses nvRaid controller functionality, which is a sort of half hardware, half software system. If he is just going to use raid for a basic file server ( if motherboard permits) , I dont see any reason to not use software raid and save the money on buying a controller card. If money is not a factor then hell, go buy a awesome controller card and call it good.

I got a qeustion it really confuses me. I have a Raid System on A PCI adapter Silicon Image S3112 and my Motherboard has 2 nVIdia sata ports.

I want to switch my raid to my motherboard because the adapter is Slow compared to onboard SATA. The thing is the nVidia raid cant see the files. I set it up once and raided it via nVidia hardwarre but i didnt see the files and the whole drive was unformated i got scared annd switched back to the S3112 any help?
