I'm considering upgrading the RAM on my laptop. As of now I have 4GB of ram and I'm thinking about going up to 8GB. I play a lot of games on my laptop, and I wanted to know would going from 4GB of RAM up to 8GB of RAM provide much of an improvement.

I have a Dell XPS L501x- Intel Core i5 CPU M460 @2.53GHz 2.53GHz-4.00GB of RAM(3.74GB usable)- windows 64bit- NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M as well as the typical Intel HD Graphics-

Well take a look at the power settings and make sure that it is set to performance. You can try to OC with MSI Afterburner. As long as you are not bumping the voltages it shouldn't have too much effect on the heat. You can also try setting your nVidia control pannell to performance and set your windows theme to basic. That should free up some system resources for games.

The only i haven't done before is the MSI Afterburner. What's it suppose to do? I'm still using the same power cord that was sent with the laptop.

MSI afterburner is a overclocking program. And do not do it. you will kill you laptop. I am speaking from experience here.

Any hardware suggestions. (I'm going to be getting around $500 soon, so I'll have a little bit of spending money. Plus after Windows 8 comes out my grandma is getting an XPS all-in-one i'll be getting her studio XPS 8100 which i'll be upgrading. So i don't want to spend all of my money i'll be getting.)

your poor gaming performance is coming from your graphics card, which you can not replace. Just save your money and wait for the XPS.

Well thank you both for the assistance. Now all i have to do is wait. The biggest bummer is I gotta wait for so long even though I can get it even now. I've been saving for some time already and have about $800 and with the $500 that i'll be getting so i'll be more then set.
