RAM Compatibility?

I feel like this ebay seller is trying to jip me or pull a bait and switch.

Computer is an old HP pavilion a1310n, with an Asus A8AE-LE motherboard.

Im trying to upgrade the ram on this old dinosaur because one of the 512 sticks died (issues + memtest hardware failure results) and the motherboard specifications state 184 pin ddr400 unbuffered non-ecc low density ram, and thats what I ordered.

Ram comes, I remove the old 2x512mb ram and install the 2 new 1GB sticks. Computer still has issues, run mem test and one of the sticks is reported with hardware issues (no matter which slot its installed on so its not a bad slot on the mobo). Remove the bad stick, computer runs fine. add in old working 512mb stick and it still works great, no test failure on either.

I email the seller and hes trying to say my motherboard isnt compatible with the ram and is trying to upsell me a $20 "upgrade" for some SuperTalent ram and then probly make me pay to ship the old crap back.

Seem like a scam to anyone else? I dont want to go off on the dude and report this to ebay (since hes a power seller that ebay backs) if im wrong, but it was stated on the auction “These Memory modules goes through rigorous Quality control and all pass laboratory tests.” which apparently isnt true (some negative feedbacks confirm this).

So it cant be a compatibility issue if one of the sticks I bought is working, right? If it wasnt compatible neither of the 1GB sticks should work.

Thank you
