I have this motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131492
i have one 512 stick in the first blue slot like it says, i just bought a 1 gig stick, my ? is where should this one be placed. i read the manual for the motherboard about configurations but was confused, they say for dual channel the two sticks must be same size. well then am i supposed to not do dual channel since i will have a 512 and a 1 gig, any help would be great.
thanks
nick

if you put that stick in the other blue slot your pc will only see 1 gb !, try putting it in the closest black slot to the CPU.

AFAIK, dual channel will be the same colour, so for 512MB and 1GB they should be in opposite colours. If you were to add more, you would have to install the new one(s) in the corresponding slot(s), unless you disable the dual channel.

Memory should always be installed in MATCHING PAIRS. Remove the 512 and replace it with the 1gb.
There should be a gap in the gold connectors, used for orientation. (It only goes in one way).

wait....

i have dual channel. i originaly put both of them in the same color channel.
this led to problems like freezing because they are both unbuffered and would interfer with eachother.

so i slid one in a different channel and it works. and is regestering the 2 gigs i bought.
i would just try putting it all in the same slot. if i freezes then put the gig in the other channel.

so if your only supposed to get them in matching pairs then how come some people have like 1.5 gig and such. my motherboard will support 4 gigs, two blue and two black slots, so its really not possible to run 1.5 then? what if i got another 1 gig to match the one i just bought, can you use the 512 then????

Ignore Kanduu. The only time that you would need to put RAM in matching pairs is if you had SIMM RAM (ancient) or if you are doing dual channel, which I think that you are not. As to which slot to put the RAM in, I don't know because I was under the impression that to dual channel them they should be in the same color slot. But try it, I don't know which would work. But you cannot do dual channel with a 1GB stick and a 512MB stick.
