Should my ram be in the two sockets next to each other?

or one in one socket and on the other 2 theres the other one

Read the manual. Not all boards are the same.

On LGA775 boards its every other slot.

They design them so even a complete novice can do it. They have each slot color coded so you know where to put each RAM slot. Please tell me you didnt install the two RAM sticks in the different colored slots...
