Ram Help!!!

Hey guy's. i have a few questions that maybe you can answer for me. i am kind of new to the computer scene so please dont laugh if i say the wrong thing. my computer currently has 2g of ram and i am looking to upgrade it to 4g. my mother board is a gigabyte GA-m57sli-s4. it has the abilty to take 4 sticks of ram (currently using two 1 gig sticks). now here is where it gets tricky (for me anyway) the guy who built my computer said that he used (generic ram?) i am not sure what this means can you help? now is upgrading ram as simple as puting it in and thats it? or is there more 2 it? can i mix this (generic ram) with a named type of ram e.g kingston, and can i upgrade past 4g of ram e.g can i purchase twin 2g sticks of ram and place them in the remaining slots thus giving me 6g of ram any and all info on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
P.S i am using windows xp pro.

If you using XP 32bit its not going to see but alittle over 3gbs. Value Ram can be anything from no name memory to low end name brand memory. You probable wont have a issue, it will just back clock and run the memory at the speed of the slowest memory. You just need to find out what the speed is already in it a get as close as possible. 6 gbs is a waste of money right now.

never had a problem with it, there are less expensive kinds that will do the same thing, but this had great reviews everywhere. I did some research on your motherboard and it has 4 slots that take 240 pin style RAM. This ram will click right in to your board. I would recommend this product to anybody. And it lights up:D He is correct, windows XP will only see 3.5 GB of ram, 4 gb will be enough for what ever you want to do right now. And yes....you do just put ram in and that's it.

-power down you case (turn off and unplug it) and let sit for about 5 minutes
-open your case and locate your RAM
-on the side are little plastic clips, push them down
-pull old RAM out
-line up new RAM (it will only go in one way) and push down until seated
-double check they are seated correctly and plastic clips are holding RAM
