My naughty little son had done something on the setting on my computer which cause my computer suddenly become very slow. After "investigate", i realize that the value for RAM in my computer properties is less than what it should be. How to change it back? please help. I need to use the computer today thats why i really need all your help. thanks
Below is what my computer properties show....
System:
Microsoft Windows XP professional version 2002 Service pack 2
Computer:
Intel Pentium III processor
731 MHZ, 248 MB of RAM

Welcome to computer forum. we hope your enjoy your stay. :D please take a look at the forum rules

also i must ask to please only post once. if some one else has the same question and searches he has 2 that he has to look for.

yes, welcome! I wouldn't have thought that it was anything to do with settings on your computer, although I could well be wrong, but the first thing I would try is to reseat the RAM

Agreed, what amount of RAM are we talking about here?

Unless you have onboard video or something, there's really no way to "disable" RAM. If you have multiple sticks in the machine, try each one by one. Perhaps one has simply come loose or died.

Yes, you son probably knocked it loose... Might've broken too... If he didn't discharge himself + used alot of force

Have you got onboard video or using a video card?, if you have onboard he might have went into the bios and raised it to 265mb from something like 32 or 64mb

I don't think a P3 board would have the option to set onboard video to use that much memory, I think it's probably set for 8MB (which may be fixed) and the 2nd 256MB stick isn't working. Of course that's making the assumption that the machine has 2 sticks of RAM. If it's a single 512MB stick of RAM then the video taking it is what makes the most sense.

You could also try and see what happens if you take one of the sticks out and turn it on, see how much it says there is, then put that stick back and try it with the other one

Yea I guess your right on a PIII board, think the last PIII board i had would go to 64mb. it had 8,16,32 and 64mb. Still have the processor 500MHZ clip down heatsink with a built in fan:D, dont know why I keep all this old stuff?

I've got one too, mines a 550MHz but it's got that same heatsink with a case fan acting as the CPU fan via a shroud. I use at as my development web server.

Cause you dont want to throw them away :D

I have an 400Mhz @ 566Mhz And an 700MHz :D Both of em overheat cause of the heat.. :( Badly designed cooling.

You mean Slot 1.

Yea there both Slot 1, Got a bunch of old stuff that I never got rid of, memories I guess I dont know. Got Pen I 166-233mhz-Pen Pro 200mhz-PenII 400mhz-PenIII 500mhz on AMD I have K6 2+ 333mhz-K6 2 500mhz-K6 III 450mhz, got a bunch of socket 5-7 and slot 1, a socket super 7 boards. Might even have a socket 8 that the pro went in. A Duron 800mhz, Athlon 900mhz, Duron 1.6mhz. Had a couple of XP Athlons but I think I sold those.

that is most probally the problem, you can reset the settings by going into the bios which can be done by rebooting your computer and repeatidly press the delete key untill a menu appears (dont wait for windows to boot, do it just as the computer turns off and on again). All bios menus are different but there should be some indication or menu option that says something like 'reset bios settings' or 'reset to optional settings' etc.

with some luck this should work, however we are in an age where you can pick up ram modules for pounds/dollas, so if this dosent work get some more ram.
