I am soon going to get more ram for my PC, and I have a question. I want a simple answer, not a wall of text about other things I can do.

After I shut off the computer and insert the new RAM stick, do I have to do anything in software or BIOS, or do I just turn on the computer and let it go, as in the new stick will automatically begin to work?
 
Oh, and one more thing:
If the new stick I buy is lower speed than my current ram, will my computer increase the speed of the new stick or lower the speed of my current ram sticks to match the new one?
 
If you buy the correct RAM for your board and the timings are right (which they usually are), then no. :)

And to answer the other question all of your RAM runs at the speed of the slowest stick.

your system should say it detects a difference :rolleyes:

+ yeah, can't go higher then the slowest stick..
 
It should correct itself.. My motherboard does that. You should just pick another stick of that up. It's not too expensive.

By correct do you mean:
1. the motherboard will increase the speed of the new ram
or
2. the motherboard will decrease the speed of the current ram to match the new stick
?
 
The Vengeance RAM is like 3 bucks more... wouldn't it be easier (and make more sense) to get another stick of Vengeance?

Yeah you can run mismatched RAM and in most cases it works fine if you get RAM of same speed and timings but I think when the price difference is like 3 bucks it's worth getting the same RAM as you already have and then getting a guarantee they'll work together.

And the board will adjust the speed of the RAM as needed. It will change the speed of all sticks to meet that of the slowest stick.
 
Makes sense to get Vengeance too because the price difference between the Vengeance and the Crucial is like 3 bucks... I mean comon'. :P
 
You need to watch mixing sticks of different brand and timings. More likely to have issues when not using matching sticks. The corsair runs at 1.5 volts and the crucial runs at 1.35v and the timings are different. Your best bet is to get matching sticks.

Wrong. Sodimm is laptop ram. Sdram stands for synchronous dynamic random access memory. Basically sdram is for desktops and sodimm is for laptops.

Ahh thanks for that. :)

I knew SODIMM was RAM for laptops but didn't know if it was an older type and I thought SDRAM had replaced it but looks like I was wrong! ;)
