okay. i had a gig in my system, or RAM, there was one stick in channel a and one in b. i bought a 1g stick. how should i install it?

Intall it in channel b. I know that's smart ass but it's pretty much that simple. 1. Push the tabs on either side of the slot away from the the slot. 2. Insert the RAM into the slot after lining it up with the grove. 3. Push the tabs back in the direction of the RAM so it snaps into place. 4. Reboot. It's that simple.

i know how to actually install it. i just remember being told to put the largest stick closest to the cpu, else the computer wont see it. but i wasn't sure how i should place the other 2 512's. when i turned it on it said they werent configured properly, but my computer still reads that i have 2 gigs.

if you had dual channel and now have three sticks, you will now revert to single channel. for dual channel, use matched pairs in both a and b channels. normally you would install the largest modules in channel a but i don't think that mattes anymore. consult your motherboard manual for specifics.
