ram/memory

To free up memory there are a few methods like using the msconfig utility for the selective startup option. There you can choose to keep certain non essential items from loading along with Windows automatically. The selective startup utlity has been in Windows since 98 for reasons like or troubleshooting problems being seen.

Memtest an old and still free Linux utility you load from a boot floppy or newer versions seeing boot cds is now included in Vista as well for testing the installed memory on a system. There are two main sites for downloading this seen at the two links here.

http://www.memtest86.com/ and at http://www.memtest.org/
For OS X you would then go to a third site seen at http://www.memtestosx.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=11&Itemid=42

Ive seen Mem Test and memdiag both that run with Windows. The one main advantage seen with memtest over those however is stress testing the system memory while literally "nothing else" is running. That's supposed to prevent something running in the background from interferring with the tests and the results seen. Gee? 573 errors seen on the memory now still used in a newer build where none are seen? Never rely any software totally.
