Hi, My spare comp' is an emachines 190 desktop tower, I use it for my home studio set up. Anyway, I thought I'd up the ram, so I got a 1gb stick. It's the correct spec' for the motherboard ( pc2100 non-ecc unbuffered 266mhz ). It currently only has a 256 stick in. So, I removed the old and replaced with new and the damn computer just won't work! I can kind of get it working in safe mode but it runs extremely slowly if at all and doesn't work in normal mode, the windows start-up screen flashes up and then nothing.

I would welcome any suggestions. I have a feeling the stick of ram is duff. Nevertheless, this is driving me mad, I have placed and replaced and given it time to boot. I am aware that the bios settings, in terms of the voltage can effect the ram but I wouldn't have thought I would have needed to bother with this as it is like for like barr the momory size of the stick( meaning it is a single stick for a single stick both at 266mhz ). Please let me know if I'm way off the mark with this theory . I have been up all night!!

Well, thanks for any help!!

mabey just reset the BIOS to defalts in try an boot it an see if that works.
try an put the 256 stick back in an see if it works, then leave it in an put the 1G stick in the other slot an see what happens.

I'll take a look

I'll try that but I can't see how leaving the 256 ram in could help? I have changed back and it works fine with the 256 in. Do I just need to remove the battery to reset the bios, with the 1gb in???

Also, what does the red devil stand for??

How much do you want to bet you bought generic, crap RAM. Even Kingston has a generic lineup with no name ICs on it. Generic RAM quite often has serious compatibility issues. I've run into it many times before, demonstrating the symptoms you describe.
