Ram Oddity

Hello... this has to be me being stupid, so.. here goes..

Had 2GB of ram installed, added a further 4GB of ram, Windows 7 (32bit) shows 4GB of ram (3gb usable)... I should have 6GB, not sure where to go from here.

If there is a preferred system diagnostic tool which you'd like me to run and post the logs here, please name it.

you need the 64bit version for Windows 7 to show all ram installed

What James said-- Windows 32-bit has a memory constraint that it can't use more than 3GB of RAM.

Ok, my chipset is 64bit, I can easily install a 64bit version of windows... even so, it states Installed physical memory: 4gb (Usable 3gb), there isn't 4GB of ram in there, there is 6... where did my other 2gb go?!

It didn't go anywhere. 32 bit can only see max 4gb only. doesn't matter if you have 16gb installed, the OS will only report that you have 4gb installed cause thats all it can see.

I see... so it can only see 4gb, and can only use 3gb, guess I'd better get the 64bit version installed then

they also have windows 8 beta 32-bit and 64-bit available on the microsoft website to download for free

The OP can install windows 7 64-bit and use the same product key, so there's no need to go out and buy another copy of windows. You can download the windows ISOs here:

Just download and burn to a DVD-R (or RW) using ImgBurn and install it with that.

Just be sure to get the right one. Most likely it is home premium.
