I have a Gateway AMD Athon 64X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz. I was using 4 512 GB sticks= 2GB and decided to put in 4 1GB sticks. Why is it telling me that my total ram is only 3.25 GB?

This i what it says about my computer model.
"Memory Upgrade for Gateway GM5084 Computer, the Gateway GM5084 Computer takes the PC3200 DDR SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR. Memory Type, and comes installed with 2.0 GB = 512 MB (removable) + 512 MB (removable) + 512 MB (removable) + 512 MB (removable) of Memory. You can upgrade your Gateway GM5084 Computer to up to a maximum of 4.0 GB Memory, the system has 4 sockets to install Memory, already with 2.0 GB = 512 MB (removable) + 512 MB (removable) + 512 MB (removable) + 512 MB (removable) standard Memory installed. For best Computer performance use the maximum amount of allowed Memory per slot for your Computer.
So with 4 1gb sticks why is it only showing 3.25? I don't think running 32 or 64 bit has anything to do with it.
I put in DDR is there a difference in DDr and DDR SDRAM?

i just have to point out one mistake in this text^
4x512GB? would be like 2TB of RAM, that pretty... yeah, AWESOME!!! first i was like wtf when 4 512 GB sticks = 2GB, but then i understood that you meant MB instead of GB... but that just lookd pretty funny..

Your 32bit OS can read up to 4gb. But depending on your hardware you have to subtract some for hardware memory addresses. So you end up with less then 4gb. available to the OS. Thats why its just showing 3.25gb.

The motherboard supports 4GB, but the OS is limiting you to 3.25GB.
