RAM question

i know i said that i would be getting 2 more gb of ram to add on to my system in another post but then i realise only 1 or 2 games would be using more than 2gb so i decided to go for 2x 512mb. so heres the question, do the RAM have to be of the same brand and same speed as my current ones?

I would not buy a set of 512MB RAM. Some motherboards have issues running RAM at full speed with all 4 DIMM slots filled. The best bet would be to get 2 x 2GB moduals. That would be a total of 4GB...that's plenty for almost everything you can do right now. Only a few programs will ever take advantage of more than 4GB.

but i already have 2x1gb ram in my system. would be a waste to buy 2x2gb and replace the current ones.

You could get 2x1GB if you wanted, that way you can keep your current 2GB. But brand doesn't matter, as long as the RAM takes the same voltage for the speed/timings you want it will work fine.
