ram question?

hi there i no no this may sound likea stupid question but i have 4x ddr2 slot i curruntly have 2x1gb ocz platium 6400 800mhz ram installed 1 either side and im looking on installing anouther 1gb just wonderd does it matter if i have two 1gb sticks one side and 1gb stick on the outher channel?does it affect performance?or should i get to 2x512mb sticks to even it out?
 
it doesn't really effect performance if the amounts are different on two different channels. you should be perfectly fine either way you choose.

Shouldn't he get two 512mb sticks?

To use dual channel?
 
oh. oops. that's my bad. yes, i thought darbz meant x2 1 GB sticks OR x2 512 MB sticks. Do not use only 1 stick in a dual channel setup, you will severely bottleneck your performance. thank you for catching that bkribbs. also try to use the same speed memory (in your case 800 MHz) for the other channel.

Yeah no problem. And it is recommended to buy in pairs if possible, but if you can't at least go for same amount of RAM and same speed, as stated above.
 
There is no problem and the difference if you have 2X512 MB RAM or 1X1GB RAM. The performance will always be same but if you take 2 then two channels divide the files and the performance into two channels.

hi yes im gona put 1.5gb on each channel to even it out thanks
