I am building a computer and when looking for memory it says Registered or Unbuffered. What does this mean? The one I am planning to use said Unbuffered is this good or bad?

Thanks,
Colin

registered and buffered ram is usually reserved for servers. I'd guess at 95+% of desktops are using nonregistered unbuffered ram.

Registered RAM contains a "register" (wow!:)) to aid in ensuring the data is being handled correctly, delaying all data from being transferred to the module for one clock cycle. The registers re-drives the signal throughout the memory chips which in turn allows for each module to be built with more memory chips, a plus for systems which require registered memory for sure.

Buffered is just a re-drive, no error checking

the cpu wont say what it need. The motherboard you chose should tell you what type of ram you need.

I dont know about socket 754 but I have a socket 939 amd and am using unbuffered ram. I believe that only the socket 940 require registered ram.

ok so if I am using this mother bourd, http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-137-046&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE

and this processor, http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-486&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE

I can use this ram, http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=20-141-423&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE

sorry for all the questions I just don't want to order all this stuff to build a pc and have it not work.

Thank you very much for your help!

Then it would be adviseable to get a new motherboard... the NF3-150s were a rushed product and eventually stoppped because of their limitations. Have a look for NF4-250s or K8T800 boards :)

Yes although you might want to look around and get a non-dual-channel kit because youll be paying a small premium for the "kit" factor and since your cpu doesnt have dual channel support ... its kinda wasted money :)
