im pretty sure yes, i have always been told to match them in pairs, but do it with a pair in slot 1 and 3, and a pair in slots 2 and 4

No, it does not matter which slots the RAM is in, however in order to run them in dual channel you need to put the matching sticks in the correctly paired slots. This varies depending on your motherboard, sometimes it's the first two and last two paired, sometimes it's 1st/3rd and 2nd/4th. Typically the slots are color coded.

cheers bossman.

I have another quick question

Which motherboards support trichannel ram?

Currently I believe you can only run triple-channel with certain models of Core i7 and Xeon processors. Whether or not the motherboard supports it of course depends on the specifications of that particular motherboard.

Currently I have 2x 512 Mb RAM sticks in my computer (slots 1 and 3)
I purchased 2x 1 Gb RAM sticks from Crucial, they should be arriving soon.
My question is: Does it matter if I put the 1 Gb sticks in slots 2 and 4 ?
Or should I switch them with my current sticks so they are in 1 and 3 while the 512 Mb's are in 2 and 4?
Cheers
There are some variables not disussed concerning your ram configuration.
State your MB model pls.
