ram timing vs speed

Which is the best timings for ram? I have read 101 but as you can see to your left I’m a newb to all this stuff I don’t quite understand 101 so can someone explain it for dummies, I guess if its for times the lower the number the better?
Would you get faster ram or better timings just say 2-2-2 @400mhz or 3-3-3 @500mhz

Thanks in advance

that's actually a difficult question, it's usually easier to compare two different sticks than group everything together and come up with an overall always true answer. Personally I look at speed over timings, but that's not to say I don't care about the timings cause I do, I usually start with a certain speed and look for good but somewhat affordable timings within it. I know if you're going to be doing a lot of gaming, the timings are more important. But like I said, it is usually easier to narrow down to a couple choices and go from there.

you want low timing, but fast speed, but I have a feeling your motherbored/CPU may not even be able to run it at 500mhz speed, thats the FSB on your CPU/mobo?

I saw the ocz PC5400 Value Pro Series @ 667 MHz PC-5400 DDR2 runs at 5-5-5 that says to me thats not good

which is faster 2-2-3 or 2-3-2?

Well DDR2 runs much faster, but has higher timings.

OCZ DDR2 2X1Gb PC5400 (533Mhz) Pro Series 5-5-5 or
OCZ DDR2 2X1Gb PC4200 (667Mhz) EL GOLD Edition 3-3-3

which is better for gamming my mobo is going to support up to 888Mhz

i would go for the pc5400...and yes, ddr may be able to outperform ddr2 in some cases, but thats the whole anology with appes and oranges. if your question was to see which is better, the best ddr2 you can buy is probably waybetter than the best ddr you can buy.

I was going to say... yeah I'd go for the 4200 myself in that situation, my ram is like 5x00 something (don't feel like checking right now) and is running below that for better timings anyways
