RAM troubles, need help.

I'm quite new to upgrading computers, but everything has gone smoothly except for the RAM, which has always been giving me problems.

Anyways, currently, i have a 1x4gb Corsair XMS3 RAM, ASUS P7P55D-E LX motherboard, Intel i5 650 processor, and a MSI GTX 660 TI graphics card. OS is Windows 7

that set up currently works fine. However, i tried to upgrade to a 12 gb ram configuration, with a set of 2x4gb XMS3 + 1x4gb XMS3. It did not work, as when i tried to turn on my computer, it would freeze at the BIOS screen.

Next i removed 1x4gb RAM, and used only the 2x4gb ram configuration, and i made sure that it was in alternating slots, furthest away from the CPU, and again, it would freeze at the bios.

Then i configured the RAM to sit in adjacent RAM slots, and this time, it would not freeze at the BIOS. However, it would give me the blue screen once it gets to the boot animation.

I would really like to have 8gb of ram, and if possible 12 gb.

Hi kl31 Can you post what model the RAM is? If you have a link to both sets that would be great. Have you tried the new RAM one stick at a time?

download memtest and burn the image to a cd. Boot memtest and see where you are getting errors. Try different configurations to see if you get any different results

This link will download a zip file of the iso you need to burn.

i resetted my BIOS

still getting the blue screen during the boot animation.

I can't get memtest to work. I burned to CD, and i selected boot from the CD drive, and i'm getting a message saying i need to select a valid boot path.

I can only boot from my SSD.

Also remember that i can't boot past the BIOS if my RAM is seated in alternating RAM slots.

When it bluescreens what is the error code you are getting? When you created the memtest cd did you just burn the file to a cd or did you actually write the image to the cd? There is a difference. Just burning the file to a cd won't work,

I don't think you can have 3 sticks in a 4 slot system, it's either 2 or 4.

Also did you put two in slot 1 and 3?

Have you tried the original stick of memory by itself again to see if it still boots? If it does have you tried just one stick of the new memory by itself? Like said above you need to burn a image of memtest to the CD/DVD.

yes, i've let one new RAM chip run by itself. I still get the blue screen during the boot animation.

mem test works now, and i'll let it run on all 8 gigs tomorrow while i'm at school.

Ok i tried remtest on the new RAM. Nothing. it wouldn't get past 2 percent. It wasn't frozen, since i could still reboot with the esc key. this was the same whether i had two sticks of ram in adjacent ram slots, or just 1 ram stick.

i tried my old ram, it worked fine. i tried some crappy PNY RAM, and it game me a whole bunch of error messages.

btw, the PNY RAM were 2x4 gigs, and were configured in alternate ram slots. It would boot past the bios screen just fine, unlike the corsair ram, which wouldn't even boot past the bios.
