Ram Upgrade

You'll have to provide a product page link not an intranet link from your account or post the eMachines model number.

TigerDirect's information shows:

Memory Speed: DDR2 533 (PC2-4200)

But I always go direct to the manufacturer and that shows the same memory standard there as seen at http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=T3612 Any faster memory that will run on that model like DDR2 667 would still run at the slower 533mhz speed there when run stock. Many will simply try ocing the memory by changing the dram timings and such.

The statement you made earlier lanpartiercarter is correct. Not all Double Data Rate 2 memory will fit all motherboards. There is 240-pin DDR2 and 200-pin DDR2. 200-pin DDR2 is made for notebooks and will not fit in desktop motherboards. 240-pin Double Data Rate 2 memory is made for desktop personal computers and also will not fit in notebooks.

For 1gb of Kingston notebook memory the description would be "Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Notebook Memory".

Now compare the description the typical 1gb of Kingston memory for a desktop. "Kingston ValueRAM 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Desktop Memory" clearly shows the difference between the two types of memory there. 200pin SO-DIMM for notebook/laptop memory while 240pin SDRAM is seen for the desktop memory.

The board in the eMachines model supports the later of the two described there. That's something you can pass along to your friend about different types as well as the speed and type the system there supports.
